where is the power

Made it through the road construction, college kids darting around heavy traffic to the Fort Worth Contemporary Arts at TCU and it was worth the trouble.   The current exhibition "where is the power" was curated by Terri Thornton and includes Valeska Soares, Mona Hatoum, Chris Powell, Liam Gillick, Robert Kinmont, Richard Wentworth, Alejandro Cesarco,  Fred Sandback, Cornelia Parker, Josiah McElheny, Glenn Ligon, Kris Pierce and one of my most favorite artists John Wilcox.

Rachel de Joode

I missed the opening and the opportunity to meet Rachel de Joode but was able to make it to Oliver Francis Gallery today. This exhibition by Rachel de Joode evolves around the notion of space in relation to the art-object.  The works deal with space-in-itself, the object-ness of space, sensual space, art-documentation as the art-piece, the real vs. the unreal, facades, gravity, and time.

The installation of these two pieces in the middle gallery was genius.  This is what I expect to encounter when visiting art galleries.

"Dimensional Drawing Of A Real Arm Holding A Cigarette Ash Noodle”, An ash-swirl held up in the air by a papier-mâché arm. This sculpture is based on an automatic drawing, a scribble turned into 3-dimensions.
“Statue Being Unveiled: Myself Standing Upside Down in 2 Dimensions” (2012), 7-feet tall cutout photo, mounted, placed in a clay base
“Crushed Big Space-In-Itself ” & “Crushed Small Space-In-Itself”, 2 faux canvasses with an image from the Hubble telescope printed on it, the canvasses are wetted, deflated and covered in acrylic

Check out the exhibition....call the gallery before you make plans to visit.

Elegance | Violence

Stopped by the Art Car Museum a couple of weeks ago to visit my friend Jim Hatchett and to see the current exhibition.  The exhibition was Elegance | Violence a 30-year survey of Perry House's work occupied the entire museum.

The exhibition will be on view through 9/2/2012.

“Perry House: Elegance/Violence” is an exhibition that includes paintings from House’s enormous body of work spanning more than 30 years. Perry House, long-time Houston artist and art educator at Houston Community College Central Campus, is a dedicated painter, devoting several hours each and every day to perfecting his craft. House’s ‘alternate reality landscapes’ are neo-expressionist, straddling the line between abstraction and realism with their nearly recognizable forms and figures. The works are allegorical in imagery, yet ambiguous in interpretation. They are, at the same time, both beautiful and disturbing. “Elegance / Violence” will include both recent and older works and reveal House’s venerable quest for balance

ABOUT PERRY HOUSE: Perry House received his M.F.A. in 1971 from California College of Arts in Oakland. In 1985, House’s work was included in an exhibition titled “Fresh Paint: The Houston School”. Curated by Barbara Rose and Susie Kalil, “Fresh Paint” marked the first time that the Museum of Fine Arts Houston devoted a large show to local painters. Also included in this historically important group show were legendary Houston painters Ron Hoover and Dick Wray. Over the years, House was represented by William Graham, Davis/McClain, and Inman Galleries. At the same time, House was also an instructor at Houston Community College Central Campus, a career from which he has recently retired after 30 years. Perry House’s retirement plans are to continue painting every day. Perry House is currently represented by Dan Allison.   - Art Car Museum

Arthur Peña @ Oliver Francis Gallery

Oliver Francis Gallery is sprinting miles ahead in the Dallas Art scene.  I hope Kevin continues to raise the bar which is sorely needed in Dallas.

The lastest exhibition, I can't even make every single exhibition, is "ever / always / elsewhere" by Arthur Peña .  Peña  is a recent grad of RISD.
