Reverses Wiped Away

New work by David Aylsworth at Inman Gallery.  This body of work is my favorite by David Aylsworth so far.  I have liked his work since the mid 90's and this is, to me, his best.  The white paintings.  The paintings were lumpy and covered his normal patterns underneath white paint.  This is an exhibition not to be missed.

Moliere and Keats are Enraged and Engaged in a Row, 2010, oil on canvas, 60x98
Down and Down I Go, 2011, 36x40
Bridges All Were Crossed, 2012, 23x23
Boring From Within, 2012, 14x30
Nightingale Without, 2012, 12x16

My favorite painting, "Indubitably", is reproduced on the Glasstire review of David's exhibition.

Jason Villegas studio visit

My friend, Michael, and I visited with Jason Villegas Saturday morning.  Jason is a bright young artist whose STAR should be on the rise.  His work is unique, smart, and likable.

Frank X Tolbert and Ann Stautberg studio visit

Michael Wynne and I visited with Frank X. Tolbert and his wife Ann Stautberg on Friday, June 15th.  A wonderful bungelow in the Houston Heights area.  The 2 story studios were behind the house - Frank's down and Ann's up.

I can't wait to vist Frank and Ann again!

Jeff Gibbons @ Oliver Francis Gallery

Dick Higgins Gallery inside Oliver Francis Gallery

Got a chance to see the DB12 exhibition in Oliver Francis Gallery's Dick Higgins Gallery (that's correct) at Jeff Gibbons' opening tonight.  Not sure how long this exhibition will be up.  However, it was nice to see another installation by Stephen Lapthisophon and others' that I am not familiar with.

Albany, Texas Outdoor Sculpture Show

Walked around Albany, Texas on Saturday and saw 3 of the 5 sculptures in the 1st Annual Albany Outdoor Sculpture show.  I wish my little town would do something similar with the same caliber of the work that this tiny west Texas town does.

Checking out as much as possible

After weeks of being unable to drive, I took this opportunity to see as much as I possibly could in one afternoon.  I only took pictures where we are welcome to.
1. Conduit Gallery to see Johnny Robertson's work.  This was the last day of his exhibition.
2. Goss Michael Foundation to see Adam McEwen and the Dallas Biennale exhibition.
3. Oliver Francis Gallery - Closed - expected
4. 500X - closed even during their normal hours - this is not uncommon to find this space closed.
5. Barry Whistler quickly  - not interested in Serra's prints.  Needed a couple of John Wilcox catalogs - Thank you Allison Thank you Barry!!! Can't like everything!
6. Nasher Sculpture Center to see Eric Swenson and a nice surprise of Jasper Johns "lead relief" series.
7. Dallas Museum of Art to see "Youth and Beauty Art of the American twenties".  Nice exhibition - lots of Georgia O'Keefee, Peter Blum, etc.  worth a visit.
8. Marty Walker Gallery to see Wayne White also on the last day of this exhibition.
9. Finally a drive to Waxahachie to visit "Song of Myself - Artwork of Georganne Deen" at Webb Gallery.

Eric Swenson's work at Nasher Sculpture Center.

Rubber Stamped Paintings by Michael Wynne

In 1999, I visited a group exhibition entitled "Superficial" at Richland College curated by Randall Garrett. I was well aware of Sean Slattery's and Derrick Saunders' work but there was a third unknown artist to me that made the biggest impact during this visit. It was Michael Wynne's rubber stamped paintings. Absolutely subtly offensive monochromatic works stuck with me for many many years. One small panel entitled "American Standard" was the one that has remained with me all these years.  I tried to find Michael Wynne in 1999 but was told he was reclusive. So I moved on. In 2011, once Randall re-opened Plush Gallery, I asked Randall about Wynne's rubber stamp paintings. Randall arranged to have a couple of the RSPs dropped off. Slowly, since March 2011, I have been able to add 4 of these absolutely offensive (sometimes funny) wonderful monochromatic and very satisfying works to my collection. Michael is a good friend today and I am still attracted to the RSPs as I was in 1999.

Works from the late 1990's -

"Circumcised Cock"
 "Dog Water"

"Firecracker"

"Pissing Drunk (White)"
"Thigh Cream"
"Pissing Drunk (Black)"

"Foreskin"

"Hospital"

Nick Barbee: Proclamation

Visited Nick Barbee's exhibition on opening day at Plush Gallery.  Thrilled to see more of Barbee's work since the Guns and Knives show last year.  I am not convinced yet but I am looking forward to seeing more of his work.

My favorite shelf piece with several sculptures made from plaster and cement.

Durer's Solid II, watercolor on metal - this was my favorite of the exhibition.
