After a 3-hour trip from Dallas we finally made it to the Old Jail Art Center for Bill Davenport's Junk Store installation. This is now my 5th version of Bill's Junk Shop installation I have seen and this was the most sparely filled space of any. And that was not bad. This installation featured more of Bill's work than the previous versions. This of course was obvious to me since I have been following Bill's work since the early 90's. This junk store version included a mini retrospective of Bill's work. Pieces from most phases of Bill's career were included. I was thrilled...Yes I had to take some work with me, however it was kind of sad that the work will evolve over the 3 month exhibition period - That is because I can't see how the exhibition will evolve over time.

Trip to Albany, Texas

Took a trip to Albany, Texas to attend Bill Davenport's exhibition at the Old Jail Art Center. Along the way and in town I took time to take photos of the buildings. Unlike what this pictures may portray, Albany is a beautiful small town that supports Texas artists in a BIG or bigger way than any major city in Texas does.

In the "Middle of Nowhere" we came across this small abandoned gas station that we had to stop at.

Sonic Architectonic opening event

Made the trip to UTD in punishing Friday evening traffic along the George Bush Turnpike for the Sonic Architectonic opening. It was well worth the trip. I was able to catch-up with many as we now move well into 2012. It was nice to see and visit with Stephen Lapthisophon. Brad Tucker, what can I say, it was so nice to catch-up with him and see his latest installation. Brad's work has been a long time favorite of mine.

Bruce was just started working on his "After Picasso" work for a group show at Nancy Margolis Gallery in New York next summer. Artists were invited to submit a 12x9 painting of a work of art from MOMA's collection. More Later.

Visited the Tony Cragg exhibition "Seeing Things" at the Nasher Sculpture Center in Dallas today. The exhibition space was overcrowded which was surprising for a museum of this caliber. The work was polished and ready for that corporate installation.

Had an opportunity to visit my friend and artist Michael Wynne at his studio in Kirvin, Texas. If you are not familiar with Michael's work, he pushes the envelope on several fronts in what appears to be several styles. Michael's work is the story of his life from school, farmer, gallery representation, museum exhibitions, to stay at home father and now creating works influenced by his surroundings in Kirvin.

I first saw the rubber stamp paintings in 1999 at Richland College and they have stuck with me since. I was very anxious and excited to revisit these paintings. I was just as captivated this time as in 1999. I will never tire of seeing these small paintings and hope to have more opportunites. What looks like a nice little monochromatic minimal painting becomes something completely different as you approach it. You are either laughing out loud or steaming mad and offended as you stomp away. Either way, if you appreciate art, this is art to experience in person.

This was also my first opportunity to see Michael's other work in person. Today, Abscess, was my favorite of the larger paintings. This is one of the "Pissing Calvin" paintings that turns pop art on its head and one that I have thought a lot about. If you have never been in Kirvin, Texas and this was my first visit, you will be taken aback as I was. The town appeared to me to be disappearing. In my mind I felt this was a painting of Kirvin, Texas.

Stacey and I visited Stephen Lapthisophon's studio today for his open studio tour. Stephen had numerous works on paper for visitors to look through. The upstairs space was gallery like and a real treat to experience. I feel very fortunite to have had the opportunity to visit Stephen's studio.

I changed my travel plans on Friday, October 14th in order to catch Brush Muscle's exhibition at Crazywood in Huntsville. I stopped by the gallery at 9:30am (weekday gallery hours are 9am to 5pm) after receiving assurance that the gallery would be open and it was confirmed by the gallery owner. Well, I wasn't surprised the gallery was closed when I showed up well after the gallery should have been open. Very disappointing. I was disappointed that I could not see Brush Muscle's work in person instead of reproductions.

My suggestion to my friends in Brush Muscle is to be more selective where you show your work. And my suggestion to a gallery - even if it is an amature gallery such as Crazywood - be open during your posted hours.

Bill Davenport and the Golden Treasures of the Pharaohs

Part roadside attraction, part excavation, Bill Davenport fills the large gallery with specimens unearthed from contemporary mass society. Inspired by Harry Burton’s photographs of the King Tutankamun excavation, the Houston based artist utilizes steel, paper mache and found objects to presume the chaos and mysticism of ordinary man’s treasures. Exhibition was curated by Charles Dee Mitchell.

Bill Davenport is a Houston based artist who holds a B.F.A. from the Rhode Island School of Design and an M.F.A. from the University of Massachusetts. He works as a contributing editor for Glasstire and a freelance art critic for the Houston Chronicle. Bill has been exhibited in over 60 exhibitions beginning his career as a resident at the Glassell School of Art, Museum of Fine Arts, Houston in the 1991 Core Fellows Exhibition and most recently at the Inman Gallery in Houston and the Angstrom Gallery in Dallas.

This exhibition follows the exhibition Floater that was on view at Moody Gallery in 2007. The work featured in Half-Life includes a wall installation of torch drawings, tree paintings in acrylic on paper, moving blankets, and burnt dictionary pages that illustrate an array of animals. Also on view is a wall painting of a beaver dam with flicker flame bulbs, as well as snow globes with cast plastic forms of the World Trade Center Towers, and cast plastic goldfish in water. Some of the works included in Half-Life were also on view in the exhibition Tree Line at the Art Museum of Southeast Texas in Beaumont in the spring of 2011.

Helen states- "Many of my works use commonplace materials and objects. I respond to readymade objects that are often discarded or flawed in some obvious way. Alterations in these familiar things elevate them and draw parallels to our own human predicament.

I am also interested in mimics and replicas. It is a happy moment for me when I can create objects that are simultaneously convincing and yet blatantly absurd in their obvious artificiality."

Helen Altman's work has been exhibited in numerous museum exhibitions. Selected solo exhibitions include the Museum of Contemporary Art, San Diego; the Glassell School of Art, the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston; and the Grace Museum, Abilene. Selected group exhibitions include the McKinney Avenue Contemporary, Dallas; the Museum of Arts and Design, New York; the Old Jail Art Center, Albany; the Meadows Museum, Southern Methodist University, Dallas; and the Chelsea Art Museum, New York. Her work is also included in the permanent collections of the Art Museum of Southeast Texas, Beaumont; the Dallas Museum of Art; the Museum of Contemporary Art, San Diego; the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston; and the Sarah Moody Gallery of Art, the University of Alabama, Tuscaloosa.

Half-Life is on view at Moody Gallery from September 10 through October 15, 2011. A reception for the artist will be held Saturday, September 17 from 6-8 pm.

Visited the latest Concentrations exhibition at the DMA. I hope the DMA continues this series of exhibitions, however they need to ensure that one artist is from Texas. Seeing Fergus Feehily's work was much anticipated by me and it did not disappoint. I wish I could have taken photos but didn't want to receive the wrath of the lonely security guard nor my wife banning me from having a camera. I love the fragil look of the work as well as simple and sometimes found materials. My favorite was "Beach Diagram" which I could not find an image.

Overall, this was my favorite work. Altered polariods by JJ Stratford documenting the trip from LA to Waxahachie. She plans to document the trip back to LA.

I liked this series of work by Philadelphia artist Martha Rich. This was not part of the Lady Comix Art however Martha latest work was included in the exhibition.

Visited DEMOLICIOUS - (from Glasstire: A one-night amalgam of the colorful and kitsch vs the foreboding and apocalyptic, set in a house slated for demolition at 7030 Fisher Rd, Dallas. Playful kittens will be dressed in drag, plastic toys melted and transformed, all under the auspices of the Mckinney Avenue Contemporary. Stacey and I stopped by Talley Dunn on Saturday July 9th to see Helen's lastest exhibition. The torch drawing installation was wonderful. It was not overwhelming and we enjoyed standing back from the work and trying to not miss a single drawing. Stacey likes the owls, I like 2 large deer drawings and we both liked the jack rabbits.

In the foyer for the small gallery where the torch drawings are installed were a handful of wire birds and set of paintings of trees on paper.

Moody Gallery is pleased to announce the exhibition Beautiful Son, featuring new work by Lawrence Lee. This marks Lee's first solo exhibition with Moody Gallery and is in conjunction with the 2011 ArtHouston event. Beautiful Son consists of nearly twenty drawings ranging in size from four feet square to eighteen inches square, which are made with gouache and ink on tea-stained paper. Lee states, "Currently, the work follows the story of a kidnapped prince who is made the slave of a wealthy family. But metaphorically, it is a story about perceived truth and about self-compared to actual truth. So the characters represent what we think about ourselves and what we internalize as truth about ourselves and juxtaposes that to who we really are and were meant to be and how so few know this truth. I have a lot fun of creating peripheral characters and tangent stories and its fun creating creatures and worlds in which I can inject recognizable objects and situations as well as the strange and very exotic. I am constantly scanning the airwaves of my life in search of interesting thoughts and moments I can weave into my ever-growing narrative".

Steve Carter, of Modern Luxury Dallas Magazine writes "Lawrence Lee's drawings inspire an American revelation...Lee creates an alternate universe populated with racial archetypes, icons and grotesques, as well as an ark's-worth of animals, foreign, domestic and fantastic."

Coast Magazine, based in Santa Ana, California describes Lee's work as "...a carnival-like swirl of vivid visual imagery, toned in hues of days gone past and reminiscent of the subconscious world of fantasies and dreams."

Lawrence Lee received his Master of Fine Arts from the Maryland Institute College of Art in 2010. His work has been exhibited in solo exhibitions at Rohrer Fine Art, Laguna Beach, California in 2008 as well as Clementine Gallery, New York, New York, who also included his work in the NADA Art Fair, both in 2007. He is represented by Barry Whistler Gallery in Dallas, Texas and has had three exhibitions with the gallery since 2006. His work has been exhibited in group exhibitions at Castle Gallery, New Rochelle, NY; Von Lintel Gallery, New York, NY; the Dallas Museum of Art, Dallas, Texas; Plush Gallery, Dallas, Texas; and the University of Arkansas Gallery, Little Rock, Arkansas. Lee's work is also part of the permanent collection of the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, Texas.

Beautiful Son will be on view at Moody Gallery from July 9 through August 6, 2011. A reception for the artist will be held Saturday, July 9 from 6-8 pm.

Skin Freak was organized by Frances Colpitt, Deedie Rose Chair of Art History, for the TCU Galleries in Fort Worth. The exhibition includes several paintings by each of the four artists: Edith Baumann (Santa Monica, CA); Darcy Huebler (Valencia, CA); Aaron Parazette (Houston, TX), and John Pomara (Dallas, TX).

Skin Freak is the final show for Inman Annex, at 3917 Main Street. A catalogue with essay by curator Fran Colpitt accompanies the exhibition.

Derived from a term coined by the critic Al Brunelle and referring to the tactile and seductive surfaces of abstract paintings in the 1960s, "Skin Freak" draws attention to the distinct physical presences of the paintings in the exhibition: the scale, heft, shape, and emotional tenor and weight of each. With elegantly refined textures, carefully honed shapes, and inventive color palettes, each artist crafts a uniquely seductive surface through the thoughtful application of paint - hand-ground pigment, acrylic, or enamel - on a variety of supports, including canvas, plywood, and aluminum. "Skin Freak" encourages viewers to experience paintings as visceral material phenomena, rather than "images" without material dimension.

The exhibition will be on view through Saturday June 25th.

Beginning Memorial Day weekend, for me, I helped Tracy pack up his studio for the long trip to his new home in Atlanta, Georgia. I took a few photos with my cell phone around Tracy's studio.

I had the opportunity to meet and work with several people that were dedicated to helping Tracy and Victora in their new adventure. Colleen Dean and her teenagers, Kim Alexander, Ron Seibler (wow Ron did the lion's share of the work), Mike Westfried, and several others that I did not get (or remember) their names.

Plush Gallery will present an installation of small sculptural and works on paper by Celia Eberle, the well known mid-career Texas artist. Eberle is a 2011 nominee for the Arthouse Texas Prize, a 2010 featured artist in the book, Texas Artists Today, published by Marquand Books, a 2007 resident at the School of Visual Arts in New York, and a 2002 Dozier Travel Grant awardee from the Dallas Museum of Art. She is the veteran of numerous solo and group exhibitions, including most recently, "Beasts and Bunnies" (2011) at the MAC, Dallas; Texas Biennial (2009) at Women and Their Work, Austin; "Survey of Texas Art and Artists" (2007) at the Wichita Falls Museum; and "New Embroidery" (2006) Contemporary Crafts Museum, Portland, Oregon.

In the words of the artist: "I have long been concerned with the changeless aspects of the human condition. There is a pattern to human affairs which we consistently choose to ignore. The persistence of human needs and desires is reflected in the persistence of myth, religion and philosophy. This is related to the continuing appeal of certain images and ideas. I copy or adapt these images and ideas in an effort to emphasize my concern over our inability to recognize the historic and natural cycles that ensnare us, despite our wealth of knowledge. Our technology may evolve, our institutions may change, but it seems we cannot change ourselves. With the use of traditional materials I intend to bring forward imagery and ideas that are analogous to current experience. I intend these artifacts to reflect and emphasize this condition of recycled experience."

A group exhibition will also be on view, including work by Dallas abstract painter Brian Ryden, Nashville photographer Kat Ryals, and Española, New Mexico mixed media artist Ben Utigard.

something to look at, an exhibition of new work by Randy Twaddle. This is his first solo show at Moody Gallery since 2006.

Twaddle's new work revisits imagery he first started using over twenty years ago - pole-mounted transformers and the distribution lines that run to and from them.
In this new work, however, Twaddle focuses on the lines themselves, and eschews charcoal, a medium he's used for 25 years, for the unusual and striking combination of ink and coffee. In these drawings, Twaddle pours and "steers" coffee over a light ink-wash ground, creating images that evoke tangled tree limbs or shadows of the silhouetted black ink distribution and telephone lines above.
Twaddle describes his interest in the distribution lines: "I love to drive down Houston streets - especially at dawn or dusk - when the transformers and the distribution lines and telephone lines are in silhouette. I'm constantly awed by the variations of their unintentional beauty and lyricism. They have a strong musical association for me, like some trippy score that's been drawn in the air by an anonymous composer."
In addition to the ink and coffee drawings, Twaddle will also be showing gouache drawings, wall covering, and a hand-knotted rug from a collection of Transformer Rugs launched by Carol Piper Rugs late last year. (Twaddle has also designed a collection of transformer-based textiles that were recently launched by CF Stinson, a nationally recognized textile distributor.)

CB1 Gallery is pleased to announce its first solo exhibition of the work of Los Angeles-based artist HK Zamani, In-between Air, Land and Sea. Zamani’s work over the past 20 years can be located within the extended field of painting, ranging from paintings and objects to site specific, multi-media installations—often including performances. The artist’s new paintings will be on view from May 22 through July 2, 2011. A reception for the artist will take place on Sunday, May 22, 2011 from 5 p.m. - 7 p.m.

HK Zamani’s images in this series of new paintings grow out of or away from their predecessors—they are sometimes devils, then angels. Some are on land, in the air or sea, occasional remnants, reformed or transformed over multiple applications of paint. The artist’s dome paintings from recent past exhibitions were portraits, perhaps even self-portraits, fragile portrayals. Some were ruins, some were vessels that transport— chrome and against corrosion—DeLorean, stellar. Many of the artist’s dome/tent paintings were more about the image than paint. The artist’s new paintings over the past 2 years, including the paintings in his current CB1 Gallery exhibition, are most definitely about paint.

In an LA Times review of For Your Pleasure, CB1 Gallery’s August 2010 group exhibition, David Pagel wrote that “Zamani’s meaty paintings come from the no-man’s- land between sleep and wakefulness, when consciousness is not fully functional and every little detail is more mysterious than usual. Cartoons form the backstory of his boiled-down compositions, but abstraction comes to the forefront in his idiosyncratic pictures that hover on the cusp of recognizablity.”

Iranian-born American HK Zamani (Habib Kheradyar Zamani) is a Los Angeles based artist and curator. His work is guided by multi-cultural influences ranging from ascetic Islam to psychedelia. He performed in the 2006 Prague Quadrennial and has exhibited at venues such as Kulturzentrum bei den Minoriten, Graz, Austria; Hohenthal und Bergen, Berlin; Pierogi, New York; W139, Amsterdam; ARC, Vienna; Kampa Museum, Prague; and Lincart, San Francisco. His work is in the permanent collections of LA County Museum and Berkeley Museum of Art. He received a C.O.L.A. Grant in 2004, and a California Foundation Getty Grant in 2005. Zamani is the founder and director of POST (1995-2005), and its recent renewal, PØST, a subversive venue for contemporary art in Los Angeles, where he has hosted over three hundred exhibitions.

A new sculptural work that combines the habit of accumulation, continued interest in transportation and possible extinction.

Hurt
A collection of recent works that arose from random sketchbook writings and illustrations. Animals are combined with symbols and signage to suggest the bitter/sweet plight of possible marketing strategies.

Kiser
The overture to Joel Kiser's work consist of a careful arrangement of appropriated Americana Kitsch forms entangled with a surface vocabulary of 1980's fan boy culture. Kiser's sculptures recall an elaborate allegory of grotesque figurines, handled typical of adolescent school boy doodles, while exposing the attraction to the "tall tale" element of storytelling.

Gun & Knife Show opening at Central Trak

Stacey and I braved the heavy traffic (not sure why it was stop and go on every single freeway) to attend the opening reception for the Gun & Knife exhibition at Central Trak.

If you like weapons, outcome of a shotgun blast, sexual innuendo or just great art then this exhibition is for you.

Tom Sale's installation of shotgun blasted silver and wood.

The exhibition is curated by Heyd Fontenot and Julie Webb. It appears that this exhibition was born out the tragedy on January 27th in Arizona which was closely followed by the state of Utah declaring the .45 caliber handgun the "official state firearm".
